Mary Esther Gaulden was a professor of radiology at UT Southwestern from 1965 until her retirement in 1992. Prior to coming to UT Southwestern, she worked as a Senior Radiation Biologist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee from 1949 to 1960. She used grasshoppers as an experimental model to study radiation and chemical damage to chromosomes in the nanoblasts of the embryo. She also worked with Edward E. Christensen, M.D., (1929-1980) to begin a pre-X-ray screening program at Parkland for women of child-bearing age, which became the prototype for such screening nationwide. In addition to her medical and scientific work, she was an advocate for women's rights and active in politics.
