Drs. Brown and Goldstein were joint winners of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their discovery of the underlying mechanisms of cholesterol metabolism, and their findings led to the development of statin drugs, the cholesterol-lowering compounds that today are among the most widely-prescribed medications in the United States. They also share the Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research (1985) and the National Medal of Science (1988) for their joint work. Dr. Brown has been a member of the UT Southwestern faculty since 1971, and Dr. Goldstein since 1972. Both have been honored in the United States by election to the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine.
