Dr. C. James Carrico received his M.D. degree from Southwestern Medical School in 1961, and was affiliated with the campus for much of his career. He did a surgery residency and fellowship at Parkland Memorial Hospital, and was the first physician to care for President John F. Kennedy after he was shot on November 22, 1963. After fulfilling his military obligation at the U.S. Naval Hospital in San Diego, Dr. Carrico returned to UT Southwestern from 1969 to 1974. He returned again as Chairman of the Surgery Department from 1990 until his retirement in 2000. A Distinguished Chair in his name was established in 2002. His dedication to education, research, and clinical care was instrumental in the growth and evolution of the department.
